Four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein is nominated again this season for his heart-warming and inclusive book for the new musical Kinky Boots. But what’s next for the beloved performer and writer? Another new play, according to The New York Observer.
Fierstein is hard at work on a new show that will premiere on the Great White Way in March 2014. The untitled new work will be produced by Fred Zollo, Colin Callender and Bob Cole. Fierstein said the play is “an ensemble piece” for nine actors.
The new untitled play marks the first new play from the Tony winner since Safe Sex in 1987. Fierstein won two Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Actor in 1983 for Torch Song Trilogy. He followed it up with a 1984 Tony win for Best Book of a Musical for La Cage aux Folles (a show that has gone on to win Best Revival twice since its premiere). Fierstein’s next Tony Award came in 2003 for originating the role of Edna Turnbalt in the musical Hairspray.
Fierstein also wrote the books for the musicals Newsies (Tony nomination), A Catered Affair and Legs Diamond. His other plays include off-Broadway’s Spookhouse, International Stud and Forget Him. His additional acting credits include Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Safe Sex, The Haunted House, Mrs. Doubtfire, Independence Day, Death to Smoochy and Bullets Over Broadway.
